I Need A Miracle
November 25th 2007
I'd like to give a little backstory to this poem. I had written this as a Sophomore in high school for a boy I was madly in love with at the time. My Creative Writing teacher had us do an entire semester on poetry and I was SO mad. I hated writing poetry. And then this boy transferred to our school and I wrote this poem at 2 o'clock in the morning. I still think to this day it is one of the best pieces I have ever written. At the end of the year, we were required to submit at least 3 pieces in attempts to be published. I sent this poem off to Chicken Soup for the Soul, and they wanted to publish it! However, I missed the deadline for publication :( Anyways, I hope you enjoy!
From the first time that I saw you,
You took my heart away.
Without speaking or saying anything,
You steal it every day.
A stranger to you, I was,
Looking as dorky as I do.
Now you know my rhyming sucks,
But it’ll get better thanks to you.
My strange noises may confuse you;
I can’t help it for God’s sake!
If ridding of them pulls you closer,
It’s a risk I’ll have to take.
I know you might not accept me at first,
But soon enough you’ll know,
The real, true me is really cool,
I just have to let it show.
I may seem shy on the outside,
But I can be outgoing.
My shyness usually takes over,
And hides me when it’s showing.
It’s hard for me to speak to you,
My words jumbled up in a jar.
But to be honest what I’d rather do,
Is adore you from afar.
My writing is my great escape,
So I’ll know just what to do,
When speaking seems impossible,
I’ll write a poem for you.
I could have written a song,
Put in a melody.
It did not make any sense,
If it was something you couldn’t see.
So here I am, sitting at home,
Writing you this silly poem,
Wondering if I should give it to you;
The idea makes me solemn.
There’s something that I noticed,
That makes the all the more fun,
Wondering if a poem that’s written only for you,
Has really ever been done.
