Swedish Breakfast Smörgåsbord

This past year, I attempted my very first Swedish Smörgåsbord. You’ve probably heard the phrase “smorgasbord,” but in Swedish it is a buffet of meats, hörs d'oeuvres, and other small dishes. A table of stuff as I like to call it.

I first had the idea when our friend group thought of doing Friendsgiving, and I, like my Grandmother, wanted to host it. I grew up helping my grandmother prepare for parties and Christmas Eve dinner, so the occasion seemed so natural to me. However, the time of Thanksgiving came and went, and it evolved into a big breakfast smörgåsbord.

As embarrassing as this might be for me, I spent weeks planning out our ‘Friendsgiving’ breakfast bonanza. I had a doodle of how I wanted the table to be set, where the food would be strategically placed so that everyone could have a bite of everything within reach; I went full-on housewife with this planning!

The day finally came for the smorgasbord, and I had already ordered all the groceries for pickup after I got off of work. And as things turn out, Walmart was beyond slammed when I arrived to pick up my groceries and I ended up arriving back home and hour and a half later than I expected.

Once I arrived home, the apron ws on and I was a’cookin!

And thus my Smörgåsbord was complete!

Here’s what ended up on the table:

Italian bread loaf, swedish crepes, scrambled eggs, sliced bananas, blueberries, four different types of crackers, brie, sharp cheddar, muenster, assorted fruits, raspberries, vegan bacon, garlic potato bake, butter, honey, strawberry jam, grape jam, maple syrup, cream cheese, salt pepper, whipped cream, and my personal favorite, Nutella.

The Italian bread loaf was a take-and-bake so ten minutes in the oven did the job! I’ll link my recipe to the Swedish Crepes here (lol one day it will appear). It’s absolutely delicious and my all time favorite breakfast food. The scrambled egg recipe is one that my husband stumbled upon while goofing around in the kitchen and it will also be linked here (eventually!). I’ll be sure to get the recipe for the potato bake because it was absolutely delicious and one of our friends brought it for the table!

As the food was finishing cooking, I had started setting the table with bits of things everywhere. I made it known that if anyone touched the table before I could get a picture for my grandma, I would have their head haha!

My Swedish heritage is something that is incredibly important to me, and throughout the years I have started embracing it more and more. Mostly through cooking which is fun because my happy place is in the kitchen, cooking a big meal for a large party.

This is all for now!
