The Disaster of Changing My Name Twice in a Year
Oooookay you guys.
I do not recommend trying to change your legal name twice in one year.
For those of you who are new here. I got married, divorced and remarried in the span of 3 years. My first marriage was a bust to say the least. I’ve got an entire blog post about the downfall of my first marriage linked here if you would like a good read. TLDR; that marriage was not meant to last. I was lied to for 6 years and at that point, forgiveness was far from an option.
Fast forward to post-divorce, I finally started the process of changing my name. The notarized paperwork was finally completed in August, and I could not wait to get my last name back. If you’ve never changed your name before, the order you have to do it is kind of weird. You have to change your driver’s license before changing your Social Security Card. I don’t know, even to this day, why it took 3 months for my driver’s license to be delivered. It could not be delivered to my cubby in my apartment complex. Why? Nobody could tell me! I think I spent a total of 12 hours on the phone with the DMV, the DOT, and USPS, trying to figure out why I could not get my driver’s license.
Finally, I got my driver’s license in the mail, November 5th. I remarried January 13th, two months later.
AND AGAIN! It took months to get my driver’s license! The worst part about the second coming of changing my legal name was that my previous married name was printed on all of my son’s ultrasounds. To top it off, they could not change it until I got my new driver’s license in the mail. My newest old driver’s license was hole-punched which deems it invalid, and they could not legally accept it as a form of identification until I physically had in hand my new IDs.
Again, it took until APRIL to receive my last and final driver’s license involving my name change.
Like I said, I do not recommend changing your legal name twice in one year. I was not expecting to find my person in the same year I divorced my first husband, or get married to him 5 months after my divorce was finalized. My circumstances were a little more unique than most in those aspects. Changing your legal name is such a process, and if you have the luck I did, it will take months before it’s complete.
This is all for now!
